This is way overdue !

We would like to take this opportunity to personally thank
John Randall DFD Retired, for his countless number of hours
he has given to the establishing of our web site.
For without his expertise this site would have remained a
concept, never getting off of the drawing board.
Thanks again John !

St. Florian

Patron saint of firefighters

Protector against fire and water

During the 4th century, Florian was born in Austria. Under the rule of the emperor
Diocletian. Florian was an officer in the Roman army and advanced in the ranks of the
army to occupy a position of high authority. It is believed that Florian saved a town from
burning by throwing a single bucket of water on the blaze. During those times of
anti-Christianity, one of the tasks of the Roman army was to search out and
persecute those who were Christians and put them to death. Florian did not believe
in the persecution of Christians and refused to carry out the order to put a grouping
of Christians to death.
Florian progressed toward the conversion of faith to Christianity and as an act of faith he surrendered himself to the governor of the city of Lorch, Aquilinus. He declared himself to be a certain believer in Christ. Because of this profession, Florian was beaten with stones and set on fire. A large stone was then tied around his neck and he was thrown into the Enns river. At a later time, his body was found and he was given a formal burial. A monastery was built near his tomb during the 900's and the village of St. Florian came to be. Florian's body was moved to Linz, Austria and then to Rome.
Florian is known universally as a protector against fire and water due to his commitments, conversion and suffering. It is said that a person was saved from a fire by calling St. Florian's name and many miracles of  healing have been attributed to his intercession.

Fireman's Prayer

Almighty God, Protector of all
Mankind, Your strength, power,
and wisdom are a beacon of light
to all men:
Give special guidance to Fireman
and Firefighters so that we may
be protected from harm while
performing our duty.
Help me with your loving care
while I work to save the lives and
property of all people young and
old.
Give me the courage, the alertness
to protect my neighbors and all
others whom I am pledge to aid
When involved in fire or accident.
Amen.

The Story of the Maltese Cross

When a courageous band of crusaders, the Knights of St. John,
fought the Saracens for possession of the Holy Lands, they were
faced with a new device of war-fire.
As the crusaders advanced on Jerusalem, the Saracens
Pelted them with glass bombs full of  naphtha and then threw
down flaming torches. Hundreds of nights were burned alive while
others risked their lives to save their kinsmen from painful fiery
deaths. Thus these became the first fire fighters. Their heroic
efforts were recognized by fellow crusaders who awarded them
with a badge of honor similar to the cross firefighters wear today.
Since the Knights of St. John lived nearly four centuries ago
on the island of Malta, in the Mediterranean Sea, the cross came to
be known as the Maltese Cross. The firefighter who wears this cross
is willing to lay down his life for others, just as the crusaders
sacrificed their lives for their fellow man so many years ago.
